ABOUT US

OUR MISSION

To model Jesus Christ through
excellent, relevant and personal services which lead to changed lives for the needy in our

community.

OUR OBJECTIVE

Broken people are transformed

by hope in Christ.

The City Rescue Mission was founded in 1911 and has a rich evangelical history. Today, the Mission exists to meet the physical, emotional, relational and spiritual needs of hurting people in western Pennsylvania. As a Christian ministry, we stand uniquely apart from other social service agencies. Our services are provided based on need, rather than ability to pay.  All services are gifted to our neighbors and guests in need that seek help for their physical and spiritual needs. Through faith-based programming, our guests often experience an inner change resulting in many experiencing a renewed and better life.

The City Rescue Mission's ministries are funded 100% through donations from private sources. The City Rescue Mission receives no governmental support and operates with the highest degree of financial stewardship and accountability. The Mission is accredited annually by the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA) and adheres to its “Seven Standards of Responsible Stewardship.”  The City Rescue Mission's certification through Citygate Network confirms the Mission's commitment to excellence and ensures good stewardship of the Mission's resources. In addition to accreditation with ECFA and certification through Citygate Network, the City Rescue Mission registers annually with the Pennsylvania Bureau of Charitable Organizations.

OUR HISTORY

The idea of a rescue mission was formed in 1910 when famous evangelist, Billy Sunday, came to New Castle for a revival.  When Billy Sunday visited any town, he usually drew a big crowd. A special tabernacle was built – called The Arena – on Grove Street in New Castle for the event. This was a spiritually exciting time in the city.

THE COMMON MYTHS ABOUT MINISTRY, OVERHEAD AND EFFICIENCY

One of the most confusing topics in the nonprofit community, both secular and religious, is the evaluation of programming, general, administrative, and fundraising expenses. Possibly, you may have been misled by common myths about ministry and overhead expenses. The Evangelical Council of Financial Accountability (ECFA) has an excellent article about this topic.
