Q: Do I need to have archery experience to participate in Centershot Archery?
A: No. No previous archery experience is needed. During the First Flight, you will learn the 11 Steps to Archery Success and you will soon be hitting the target!
Q: How old do I have to be to participate in Centershot Archery?
A: Archers age 9 to 18 can participate in Centershot Archery.
Q: Where can I get the Waiver and Emergency Contact forms?
A: Click here to download the Waiver and Emergency Contact Forms. Bring these forms to the first archery session. New forms will be required for each calendar year for all student archers.
Q: Is archery a safe sport?
A: Yes! Archery has a better safety record than any other ball sport, with the exception of table tennis (a.k.a. ping-pong). The key to a safe and fun experience is that all student archers must follow the safety rules established at every shooting session. The Centershot range will be run with strict safety rules and all student archers are expected to follow them. Shooting privileges will be removed from students who do not obey the safety rules.
Q: Do I have to own my own equipment?
A: No, all archery equipment will be provided. As a Centershot Archery participant, you will have the opportunity to use Genesis and Genesis Mini compound bows, Easton arrows, and Morrell targets. This equipment is designed to provide the safest archery experience for you. The equipment is adjustable so archers of all ages and sizes can participate.
Q: If I have my own bow, can I use it at Centershot Archery?
A: Yes, but only if it is a Genesis bow approved for use within the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). No other equipment is permitted.
Q: Can I use a sight or release aides while shooting at Centershot Archery?
A: No. No special equipment is needed or permitted, unless it is used to assist an archer with a physical limitation. For example, archers who have difficulty standing may shoot from a seated position or students missing fingers may use a release aid.
Q: I have a physical limitation, can I still participate in Centershot Archery?
A: Yes! Archery is an inclusive sport and the NASP model is designed so students of all physical abilities can participate. Any special needs can be discussed with Coach Plyler by emailing archery@cityrescuemission.org or by texting through the Remind system. Parents may use the Remind text system to privately message Coach Plyler at any time.
Q: Who will teach and coach the student archers?
A: Our Archery Coaches are Sam Plyler and John Micco. Coach Plyler joined the Centershot staff in 2024 and holds NASP Basic Archery Instructor certification and previously coached a competitive archery team at a local school. Coach Micco joined the Centershot Archery staff in 2019 and is certified as a Basic Archery Instructor with NASP and has many years of coaching experience including coaching multiple Pennsylvania state championship teams.
Q: What if I already know to shoot? Will I still need to learn the 11 Steps to Archery Success?
A: All student archers will be required to learn the 11 Steps to Archery Success, which has been developed by the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) and is used in more than 13,000 schools by over a million students. The NASP process will provide you with the best chance for success and safety while shooting. Students that already participate on a NASP competitive team with their school may be waived out of some instruction if they can demonstrate their knowledge of the NASP curriculum.
Q: Will I have to participate in a Bible lesson in Centershot Archery?
A: Yes, all Centershot Archery participants will have the opportunity to participate in a short devotion or Bible lesson during each Flight.
Q: Will I get to participate in archery competitions like a tournament?
A: Yes! Centershot archers will get a chance to win trophies and other prizes at scheduled Fun Shoots typically held
twice per calendar year.
